(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Ohio River cotton mill, an egg-shaped swimming pool and a northern Indiana employment office have joined seven other sites on a list of the state’s 10 Most Endangered places.
Indiana Landmarks has issued the list since 1991 in efforts to call attention to the needs of historically significant properties.
Indiana Landmarks President Marsh Davis said all of the sites have potential for revitalization but acknowledged they can be a challenge to save. The group hopes that including them on its most endangered list will bring attention to their plight and help "find solutions that will ensure their preservation," he said.
This year's list includes three in Clarksville, New Harmony and Vincennes that were carried over from 2012 and seven new entries.
The newest additions include the Eagle Cotton Mill in Madison, Anderson's Athletic Park Pool and the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant employment office near LaPorte.
The Anderson pool was built in 1925 and is one of only a handful of remaining pools designed by engineer Wesley Bintz, who patented an egg-shaped above-ground pool that incorporated dressing rooms under the structure.
The ordnance plant, about eight miles south of LaPorte, employed more than 20,000 people during World War II. Its employment office was created by John Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright and the inventor of Lincoln Logs.
One of the 2012 carry-overs is the Old Clarksville Site, which includes the spot where Lewis and Clark launched their expedition in 1803. Indiana Landmarks officials say they hope that its inclusion on the list will lead the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help stop erosion of an Ohio River dam that threatens the nearly 300-acre site.
Other sites on the list are located in Delphi, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Walkerton.
