(TERRE HAUTE) - 9-year-old Bryce Chaney wasn’t expecting anything interesting at Union Hospital Tuesday night while visiting a sick relative.
Patsy Kelly of WTHI reports that what he got was one interesting show.
Police arrested a man after he caused an accident involving a deputy.
First responders took him to Union Hospital.
9-year-old Bryce Chaney was also at that hospital. He was visiting his cousin.
That's when he witnessed the unexpected, an escape in progress.
"I saw this guy running out and I said, Nana, who is that guy over there taking his shirt off? He took his shirt off and started running," said Bryce.
Shane Jenkins was being tested for intoxication at Union when he slipped out of his handcuffs and bolted out the door.
But not before Bryce noticed something unusual to him. He saw a man in orange pants and shirt, running.
Bryce turned to his Nana and said he thought it was a bad guy.
So a family member ran into the hospital and told the police officers inside.
Deputies had spotted Jenkins running through the parking lot already.
"When we pulled into the parking lot, citizens were pointing to an area of the parking lot where they had seen an individual in an orange jumpsuit, fleeing," said Chief Deputy Clark Cottom, Vigo County Sheriff's Department.
But not before Bryce witnessed this once-in-a-lifetime scene.
"He said get on the ground now. But he said it real loud though. And it was cool how the cops in the car got there so fast," said Bryce.
And now this vigilant nine-year-old wants to protect and serve.
"I want to be a policeman...the guard to the hospital, he came out and shook my hand and said good job," said Bryce.
Jenkins will appear in court April 22.
