(COLUMBUS) - Leaders in Columbus say they probably won’t act on a flood-control project recommended by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers because the costs outweigh the benefits.
The Corps recommended the city spend nearly $8 million to build a 28-acre retention basin on Haw Creek. But city officials say the project would have done little to reduce the levels of the 2008 flooding that caused $500 million in damage and killed two people in Bartholomew County. They also contend it would have limited impact on smaller floods.
The June 2008 flooding occurred after 10 inches of rain fell on saturated soils north of the county and caused local waterways to overflow their banks. Haw Creek caused much of the damage within the city limits.
