(HOPE) - An Indiana fire department’s decision to choose its chief’s brother to build a new $700,000 station is raising ethics concerns among some town residents.
The Republic in Columbus reports Hope Town Board member Tim Shoaf is questioning the bidding process that led to the selection of Tim Ross to build the new Hope Volunteer Fire Department station.
The fire department received three bids for the project. The State Board of Accounts says the department isn't required to go through a public bidding process because it's an independent, not-for-profit corporation.
Chief Jon Ross says he left the room and abstained from the vote to award the contract.
Resident Alise Pate says the contract creates an appearance of unethical behavior.
The station is expected to open by Sept. 1.
