(VERMILLION COUNTY) - A dog that was left to drown was thankfully saved by a good Samaritan. The Parke Vermillion Humane Society is calling this man a hero.
WTHI reports that how the dog got thrown into the water may never be known, but the shelter is simply celebrating the brave dogs life today.
"It wasn't very nice," said Troy Jones, "there were cinder blocks tied to the side of the dogs head, trying to drown it, and both of it's legs were tied together."
"He also found a letter with the dog and it stated that they wanted the animal to die," said Dareth Stonebraker from the Parke-Vermillion Humane Shelter.
It was a shocking story with a happy ending.
Serendipity is a young Labrador mix, and she's been through a lot already.
"I heard something whining down by the crick," said Jones, "I looked over and saw a dog with his head, all was sticking up was part of his nose, mouth trying to get air."
Serendipity has Jones to thank for her life.
After he rescued the dog, he got her home, cleaned her up and took her to a safe place.
However, even after saving her, he can't get over how they met.
"I was very disturbed to see what I seen," said Jones, "I think it's very cruel that someone could be like that."
The good news is Serendipity is just fine today.
"For the things that she's been through, she's actually in pretty good shape," said Stonebraker. "Her body temperature was normal. Physically, she doesn't have any wounds. She's very fortunate."
Jones made quite the new friend.
"The good Samaritan came back this afternoon to check on her," said Janine Ostrum from the shelter. "We all came in to visit. She was so grateful to see him again; licking him, wagging tail."
It's something the shelter sees more than they'd like, but this show of cruelty is one of the worst.
Jones says he has a simple message for everyone in the Wabash Valley; whether an animal is being mistreated or left alone, he hopes you'll remember serendipity.
"If you get a chance, try to look to the dog at mill dam, give it a home and a life it needs," said Jones.
The shelter and the good samaritan has no information on who left the dog, but they say if anyone does know anything about Serendipity's owner, they'd appreciate that information.
Serendipity is now up for adoption to a loving home.
