(AVON) - The former food services administrator for the Avon Community School Corp. was charged with a felony theft count stemming from money that was taken from the district.
Kara Kenney of TheIndyChannel.com staff reports that according to a probable cause affidavit filed March 1 and obtained by Call 6 Investigator Kara Kenney, Avon police were called to the district office to take a theft report in December.
Superintendent Margaret Hoernemann told police that Shelia Huddleson had been fired after she admitted taking $3,200 in cash from sales of the district's kitchen equipment.
Officials said Huddleson surrendered $1,400 that was in her desk drawer and had deposited the remaining $1,800 in her personal bank account.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Huddleson explained that her husband was dying of cancer and that they had incurred a lot of medical expenses.
"She explained she was trying to supplement her finances to pay outstanding medical expenses," read part of the probable cause affidavit. "She admitted that she had intended to buy gifts and to have a Christmas party for her cafeteria staff."
When confronted by police, Huddleson agreed to return the remaining $1,800.
"Mrs. Huddleson was very cooperative, returned the missing money, is 62 years old, and has a medical hardship with her ill husband," read the report.
A spokesperson with the Avon School Corp. told RTV6 that Huddleson was employed with the district for 12 years.
Huddleson has been issued a summons to appear in court for an initial hearing on Wednesday, April 3 at 2:30 p.m.
