(HOBART) - Drivers on Interstate 80 in Lake County saw more than cars on the road during rush hour Tuesday afternoon.
Indiana State Police say a horse had jumped a fence and was running on eastbound I-80.
Troopers found the horse, named Geraldo, lying down on the inner shoulder. Two drivers stopped their car and one of them, Colleen Flee of Chesterton laid down next to the horse to keep it calm.
Eastbound traffic was stopped so the troopers could walk the horse to the other side of the interstate into a grassy area, behind a barrier wall.
State Police credited the alertness and kindness of the people who stopped which prevented what could have been a much worse situation.
