(EVANSVILLE) - An Indiana man who pleaded guilty to conspiring to bribe contracting officials at a U.S. Army base in Kuwait has been sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison.
The Justice Department says 41-year-old Wajdi Birjas of Evansville agreed to forfeit $675,000 to the government as part of his guilty plea in 2010. A federal judge Tuesday also ordered him to serve three years of probation.
Court documents say the former Defense Department contract employee paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to three officials at Camp Arifjan in exchange for a Kuwaiti contractor receiving defense contracts worth $1.7 million. In return, he received a share of the profits.
