(ALBANY) - Officials call it a case of “animal hoarding.”
Teresa Mackin of WISH TV8 reports the 24 dogs were found in a home on State Road 67, just south of Albany. That's about 20 minutes northeast of Muncie.
Animal Control officials say they were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.They say the health department had gone on a routine inspection after someone called and complained about trash and debris out front.
But when the woman who lives there opened the door, they found an excessive amount of dogs, in "deplorable conditions."
"There was feces decaying on the ground, floorboards started to rot from the urine, a huge strong smell of urine and feces throughout the house. All the doors were chewed," said Phil Peckinpaugh, Superintendent of Animal Care and Services for Muncie and Delaware County.
Peckinpaugh said the dogs are pretty healthy, considering the circumstances.
Officials took 20 dogs to the Muncie Animal Shelter, leaving three with the woman, and one with her friend.
Peckinpaugh said he was not going to pursue charges, and he didn't believe the health department or police would either. He said at this point, they were working to help the woman clean the home, and get counseling.
Peckinpaugh explained there is a limit on how many dogs you can have in Muncie. This woman lived in unincorporated Delaware County, and he added, there is no ordinance in that area.
These dogs are ready for adoption now at the Muncie Animal Shelter.
