(CRAWFORDSVILLE) - Police placed four female juveniles into custody after they attempted to run over an officer and flee from police early Sunday morning, officials said.
An officer with the Crawfordsville Police Department spotted a 2002 Ford van that police were looking for because it had been stolen from Greencastle.
The officer stopped the vehicle and ordered the subjects out of the vehicle.
The driver put the vehicle in reverse, struck the police car and attempted to run the officer down, authorities said.
Police said the officer fired several rounds at the vehicle to protect himself and then returned to his police car to chase the van that had fled.
The van went south for a block and then all four of the occupants got out and started running, officials said.
The officer was able to place one subject into custody as other officers arrived.
After a short pursuit, the other three subjects were placed into custody, police said.
Authorities said all four female juvenile suspects ranged in age from 13 to 17 years old.
Police said they escaped earlier Sunday morning from the ResCare Residential Program in Greencastle, Ind.
The stolen van was the property of the residential program, officials said.
