(UNDATED) - Indiana’s senior population now tops 800,000 people.
Cicoa Aging and In Home Solutions CEO Orion Bell says that figure is set to double over the next 20 years. Bell says there will be as many seniors as children.
Cicoa is Indy's agency on aging. The organization is currently in the midst of a community survey and study that will help them draft a strategic plan for the area's aging population.
Bell says seniors face challenges on numerous fronts: transportation with access to services, isolation and housing affordability in addition to long term care, and meals and nutrition.
Bell says the aging population will directly affect the children of seniors. Offspring are already facing issues connected to the care of elderly parents.
Bell says Cicoa's survey and needs assessment - results to be released this summer - are designed to give people information needed to make informed decisions about options and services available to seniors.
