(UNDATED) - The latest figures from Mothers Against Drunk Driving show that DUIs are to blame for about 28% of traffic deaths in Indiana.
In the past five years, DUIs are also responsible for 1044 fatalities in the Hoosier State. Indiana ranks 16th among states when it comes to drunk driving.
Indianapolis Criminal Defense Attorney Jeff Mendes says DUIs are often costly for the accused. Mendes says after adding up court costs and attorney fees, and heavy fines, DUIs end up costing clients anywhere from $7500 to $10,000. Mendes says that often includes probation, probation user and testing frees and their auto insurance doubles for at least three years.
He also says that at least 25% of DUI clients end up with second offenses.
Mendes says since the legal alcohol limit was dropped from .10 to .08, DUIs have trended upward.
