(HOBART) - An Indiana State Trooper is being hailed as a hero for saving a 2-year-old girl after the toddler stopped breathing while riding in her mom’s SUV.
Jennifer Newsum was driving along a highway in northwest Indiana when she noticed her daughter had stopped breathing.
Newsum pulled over to the side of the road and Trooper Dan Avitia spotted her SUV after hearing a call on his radio about a medical emergency involving a child.
Avitia pulled over and performed CPR on the girl.
"I was determined to see if she was breathing. I saw she had blue lips, which shows from our training she's not getting oxygen. (Then) I started to administer CPR," Avitia said.
Officials did not say what caused the girl to stop breathing.
She's said to be recovering and doing well.
