(LAKE COUNTY) - An 86-year-old man from northwestern Indiana died after setting himself on fire while smoking a pipe, police said.
Lowell Fire Department assistant chief Charles Scott says James Johnson suffered extensive burns in the Monday afternoon accident at a home in the Lake County town.
The Cook County medical examiner's office says Johnson died late Monday at a Chicago hospital.
Cindy Johnson said that her father-in-law had gone inside the garage to smoke because of strong winds. She says Johnson was covered in flames by the time her husband reached him after hearing calls for help, the Times of Munster reported.
She says Johnson was a retired U.S. Steel carpenter who had recently had moved in with them.
