(WARSAW) - Kosciusko County deputies have arrested a second Warsaw woman in connection with an injured 4-year-old child.
The Journal Gazette reports that Jolene Marie Swihart, 30, of the 1600 block of East County Road 200 North, Warsaw, was arrested at 9:13 p.m. Wednesday on a preliminary charge of battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a victim less than 14 years old, according to a written statement issued Thursday by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.
It said officers and officials with the Department of Child Services initially began an investigation Monday at the same residence that led to the arrest of Sherena Michele Harris, 26, on the same charge, as well as neglect of a dependent.
Investigators reported that they determined that Swihart also kicked and potentially injured the same child on other occasions. Swihart's bond was set at $5,000.
The bond for Harris, the child's mother, was set at $2,000, the sheriff's department said Tuesday.
Sheriff's deputies and officials from the Department of Child Services went to the home on Monday to do an inspection.
As caseworkers interviewed Harris, police said, they saw what appeared to be bruises on the girl.
Harris was taken to the sheriff's department to continue the interview and subsequently told police she struck her daughter with a belt and had previously taped her mouth shut, according to Tuesday's statement from the sheriff's department.
