Last updated on Monday, May 6, 2013

(SPEEDWAY) - The town of Speedway is preparing for the excitement of the Indianapolis 500 and officials said they hope people will visit for more than just the day of the race.

Ebone Monet of TheIndyChannel.com reports that leaders say they are excited for the month of May and encouraged people not to wait until the Indy 500 to check out all of the changes and new additions that Speedway has to offer.

"If you were on Main Street two or three years ago, you would be amazed at how it looks today," said Scott Harris with the Speedway Redevelopment Commission.

Main Street has a new look with new businesses and leaders said now is the time to check out the new additions.

"The month of May is always exciting for us because we have lots of visitors that are here for the various events at the track," Harris said.

Speedway is hosting a serious of free events leading up to the Indy 500.

Business owner Connie Norton hopes families enjoying the various events stop into her store.

Norton said the years of renovations are slowly starting to pay off.

"We had a really good year in 2007 and we have not seen it come back to that degree yet. We are getting more and more people every day and we're grateful, and of course we're anxious for the 500 to come," Norton said.

Leaders said they are ready to announce even more new businesses in the coming weeks.

Speedway leaders said May will always be a special time, but there is so much to enjoy on Main Street all year.

"Festival on Main" will take place May 10. Town officials promised family fun with classic cars, music and a zip line.

RTV6 is the only place to watch the race on May 26.
