(GOSHEN) - A teenager has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for fatally beating a 76-year-old woman inside her northern Indiana home.
An Elkhart County judge ordered the sentence Thursday for 18-year-old Luis Bailey of Goshen in the December death of Norma Hopper. Bailey pleaded guilty to murder charges in exchange for prosecutors not seeking life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Goshen News and The Elkhart Truth report Bailey testified during his plea hearing that he broke into Hopper's Elkhart home looking for items to steal in order to buy marijuana. Bailey said he beat Hopper with a metal fence post and then took her car that was later found abandoned in Michigan.
Bailey was 17 at the time and was arrested two days after the attack.
