Trooper Hit By Passing Vehicle While Working Accident

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis trooper suffered minor injuries after he was struck by a passing vehicle while working a crash downtown.

Around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, Trooper Ronneal Williams was on the scene of a property damage crash on northbound I-65 near the Meridian Street exit.

The vehicles involved in the crash were in the middle lane of I-65, and Trooper Williams instructed the drivers to move to the exit ramp for safety and to open the I-65 traffic lanes.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash, driven by Ronald Greene, 64 of Indianapolis, was attempting to back up with the assistance of Trooper Williams.

While Greene was backing up, the trooper saw another vehicle approaching the scene. He motioned and yelled for Greene to stop, but he did not.

A metal luggage rack attached to Greene's vehicle struck the trooper and knocked him down. Trooper Williams was knocked down and rolled to safety.

Greene continued backing up, striking the oncoming vehicle.

Medics transported Trooper Williams to IU Health Methodist Hospital for treatment of pain and abrasions to his lower leg. He was treated, released and is recovering at home.

Troopers issued Greene a traffic citation for disregarding a police officer directing traffic.
