(INDIANAPOLIS) - A 6-year-old girl has drowned in a pool at an apartment complex on the city’s north side Tuesday evening, officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police confirmed.
The incident happened in the 9000 block of North College Avenue at the Lakeside Pointe at Nora apartment complex at 6 p.m.
There was an employee monitoring the pool who found the victim unresponsive at the bottom of the pool, IMPD said.
Workers pulled the child out of the water and performed CPR until first responders arrived.
The child was taken to St. Vincent Peyton Manning Children's Hospital in critical condition where she was later pronounced dead.
The girl and her family moved to Indianapolis from the Democratic Republic of the Congo eight months ago, an IMPD spokesman said.
Officials said the child's mother was at work the child was under the care of a babysitter who let her walk to the pool by herself.
