(EVANSVILLE) - A death investigation is under way in Evansville after the body of a man was found inside of a vacant home.
Neighbors tell WFIE 14 News that they discovered the body a week ago, but waited until Friday night to call police. They say they went in the home last Saturday because it's been vacant for several years and they were interested in purchasing it. According to the neighbors, the home was unlocked so they went inside and the home seemed empty.
They say as they walked in, the saw a wallet and some keys and then came to the body lying on the floor. Three days later that same neighbor took a friend to the home. They say one man stood at the door, the other went in to investigate, and what he saw nearly terrified him.
"He said he saw something laying on the floor, he had to put his glasses on to see it, he bent over and when he got down to where he could focus in, he said he realized that it was a face, and a body laying there," says Cyndi Norhaus. "It was mummified, no eyes, said the legs were straight out, the hand was on his chest and the other hand was out to his side, said he wasn't very big, said he was about that thick and he said it was just scary."
An autopsy is scheduled for today. The coroner's office says in the body's current condition, it cannot be determined if foul play is involved.
