(CORYDON) - A newly opened cave in southern Indiana is taking visitors back to the Ice Age.
Indiana Caverns in Corydon opened to the public over the weekend, three years after cave explorers found the new segment of the Binkley Cave system in 2010. The discovery of the new segment also uncovered some Ice Age artifacts.
Cave explorers discovered the fossilized bones of black bears and bison that officials believe to be between 12,000 and 35,000 years old.
Indiana Caverns officials say the discovery of a new chamber isn't uncommon, but isn't easy either. They say the teams that found the new cave could only get into it by crawling on their stomachs for four hours in and four hours out.
