(FORT WAYNE) - Employees at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo are cleaning up a mess left by floodwaters that closed the zoo following torrential overnight rains.
The zoo closed for the day Saturday after storms dumped more than five inches of rain on the city, forcing the zoo's overnight watchmen and other staff to move more than 1,000 animals to higher ground. Zoo weekend education supervisor Diane Current tells WANE-TV the animals are doing well and are "fed, dry, and happy."
With the zoo closed, staff spent Saturday cleaning up, using pumps and brooms to clear the floodwaters.
Mickey Claus of Mount Pleasant, Mich., drove his family to Fort Wayne to visit the zoo only to discover it closed Saturday. He was searching for something else for his family to do.
