(SOUTH BEND) - The former Saint Joseph County Democratic chairman has been sentenced to a year in prison for leading a scheme to forge petition signatures in the 2008 presidential primary.
A jury convicted Butch Morgan of conspiracy to commit forgery. Prosecutors say he orchestrated the forging of petition signatures to ensure then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton made it onto the Indiana ballot during their fight for the presidential nomination.
Morgan will have to serve a year of home detention or work release after he gets out of prison.
A county voter registration worker was sentenced to a year of community corrections. Two co-workers who pleaded guilty were sentenced to probation.
