(UNDATED) - A new survey from the United Health Foundation ranks Indiana 32nd in the nation for the health of residents over 65-years-old.
The survey says Indiana ranks 36th for obesity, 42nd for physical inactivity and 44th for smoking among seniors.
Dr. Patrick Healey, a geriatrician with the St. Vincent Hospital Center for Healthy Aging, says these factors are somewhat related. He says it's well known that a sedentary lifestyle, obesity and tobacco use are major contributors to cardiovascular disease and we all need to pay attention to it.
The survey also says 80-percent of Indiana seniors have at least one chronic disease. Dr. Healey says could be anything from arthritis to hypertension to cardiovascular disease.
He adds that, despite what many seniors may think, it's never too late to start improving your health.
Minnesota was ranked at the top of the list for senior health. Mississippi was ranked 50th.
