Indiana's 1st Riverboat Casino Has New Name

Last updated on Thursday, June 13, 2013

(EVANSVILLE) - Indiana’s first riverboat casino has changed its name to match that of its corporate owner.

The Evansville riverboat known as Casino Aztar since it opened in late 1995 started operating Tuesday as Tropicana Evansville. It has been owned since 2007 by Las Vegas-based Tropicana Entertainment, which owns or operates eight casinos in Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey and Aruba.

Casino spokesman Andy Herbertz tells the Evansville Courier & Press that a celebration of the name change at its hotel lobby will include announcement of plans for a former nightclub near the casino that closed in January.

Company officials decided to put the Tropicana name on the Evansville riverboat because it is better known among gamblers.
