(JONESVILLE) - A small southern Indiana town remains afoul of state law by not replacing its clerk-treasurer more than four years after the last person in the job admitted to embezzling thousands of dollars.
Jonesville Town Council members say they've been unable to find anyone among the Bartholomew County community's 200 residents willing and able to take the job.
The Republic reports a new State Board of Accounts audit cited the town for illegally having council members fulfilling the clerk-treasurer's duties. County Prosecutor Bill Nash says he's not aware of having authority to enforce such laws.
Town Councilman Stacy Bennett says town leaders are doing the best they can and that its finances have improved since ex-clerk Melissa Schultheis was ordered to repay more than $90,000 over about 25 years.
