(TERRE HAUTE) - A Terre Haute pharmacy is facing state sanctions for the number of prescriptions it filled for out-of-state customers who always paid in cash.
Rafael Sanchez, Call 6 Investigator, reports that the Attorney General's office has just filed a complaint against Hoosiers Prescription Shop, located at 3020 S. Seventh St. in Terre Haute, and its owner, Ashok Patel.
According to the complaint, Patel is in trouble for his "failure to exercise appropriate professional judgment in filling prescriptions for out of state patients and their prescribers" from February through August 2012.
The state says it reviewed 71 of his patient files after it received a tip from a company that supplies controlled substances.
The investigation revealed that Patel had dispensed about 22,000 oxycodone tablets to the 71 customers who in total paid $53,000 in cash.
Court documents say the average patient was 41 years old, and the average prescription was 122 tablets.
While a majority of the customers were from Kentucky, the complaint adds that some traveled from Ohio, Georgia and Florida.
