(CENTER POINT) - A Chicago-area woman is in critical condition at Wishard Hospital following a tiger attack.
Clay County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Rob Gambill says it happened around 1 pm at the Exotic Feline Rescue Center in Center Point.
Gambill says the young woman who works at the Center and was cleaning up, entered a large cage that also contained a smaller cage that held the tiger. Gambill says the door on the tiger cage wasn't properly shut and the tiger escaped and grabbed her by the head with its mouth.
Gambill says center owner Joe Taft and others used a water hose on the tiger and a piece of meat to distract it and free the woman.
Gambill says they're not releasing the woman's identity until her family is notified.
The center is located at 2221 E. Ashboro Road in Centerpoint. Gambill says Taft takes in cats from all over the nation to keep them from being euthanized.
