(ELWOOD) - Madison County SWAT surrounded a house on K Street on the south side of Elwood after officers heard what they believed to be a gunshot during a felony arrest Thursday night.
The subject was found dead inside the house after a three-hour standoff.
Sheriff Ron Richardson said county deputies and Elwood Police were serving a warrant at the home just before 9:30 p.m. Thursday, and the homeowner had given them permission to search the house.
After the reported gunshot, officers retreated and tactical units surrounded the house. A negotiator attempted to speak to the subject believed to have fired the shot.
Richardson said tear gas was used in the house, and when SWAT officers searched and cleared the first floor of the home, they spotted what they believed to be the suspect in the crawl space, and sent in a police K9.
Richardson did not identify the subject of the arrest warrant, but said the suspected crime involved meth. That man was found dead of a gunshot wound. No officers fired shots during the arrest or standoff, according to Richardson.
An autopsy will determine if the suspect shot himself. His identity will be withheld until relatives are notified.
State Road 13 was blocked off to traffic and residents in the immediate were evacuated when the SWAT team moved in. The road was reopened shortly after 2:00 a.m. when the situation was resolved.
