(INDIANAPOLIS) - Officials believe a dog fighting bait dog was found on the city’s northeast side.
WISH TV 8 reports, the dog was surrendered to the Humane Society of Indianapolis and is recovering Monday following emergency surgery.
IndyHumane employees say the dog had hundreds of puncture wounds - both old and new in various stages of healing.
Officials say dogs used as bait for dog fight practice are often muzzled on their mouths or their mouths are bound with duct tape so they can't defend themselves while a fighting dog practices to fight other dogs.

Signs of dogs used in combat include pit bull-type dogs kept in one location - some who are unsocial and chained, dogs with scars on their face, front legs or thighs, dog fighting equipment including treadmills, tires, springpoles or unusual foot traffic in and out of a home during odd hours.
