(WEST LAFAYETTE) - The Purdue Board of Trustees has approved more than $58,000 in performance-based incentive pay for president Mitch Daniels.
WLFI reports, at Friday's trustees meeting, the trustees said they believe from January to June of this year, Daniels has exceeded expectations.
The trustees say he gained faculty respect, maintained student affordability, and did so with plenty of energy.
They approved the incentive pay, which means he earned an extra $58,153.84 by the end of June.
Daniels has a base salary of $420,000.
The trustees' new chairman, Tom Spurgeon, said Daniels hit the ground running when he began his presidency.
"It seemed like he was on roller skates, going all the time," Spurgeon said. "Meeting people, attending events, and so on. It was just a good performance and it exceeded our expectations."
Board of Trustees' Keith Krach added that Daniels' maximum compensation level is still below previous president France Córdova's.
Daniels told media at the meeting that this is "not a bonus."
Spurgeon says a final document with certain goals for Daniels should be presented at the September board meeting.
