(INDIANAPOLIS) - A young child and her mother were seriously hurt in an accident involving the family’s vehicle Wednesday evening.
WTHR reports, the accident happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Jill Court, near E. 25th Street and Post Road.
Police say a five-year-old child shifted an SUV into neutral, possibly accidentally, and the vehicle backed onto his three-year-old sister, who was in a car seat, and the children's mother, who was loading parcels into the trunk.
The victims were pinned under the vehicle, which rolled into the street.
The children's father heard cries for help and rushed to move the vehicle.
When police arrived they found a distraught father and the woman and child injured.
Police believe the mother took the brunt of the impact from the SUV.
Officer Chris Wilburn says the mother's adrenaline kicked in and she did what she had to do to protect her child. The father heard the screams and rushed out and moved the vehicle.
The girl and her mother were alert and conscious on their way to Methodist Hospital. Police said the victims were awake and talking, but their injuries were very serious. The mother's lower extremities were reportedly severely injured, police said.
Investigators with the Fatal Accident Crash Team were called to the scene because of the serious injuries involved. Investigators took measurements, interviewed the father and possibly draw blood, all of which are standard procedures in any kind of situation involving a vehicle and injuries.
Still, police said the FACT investigators will present their findings to the prosecutor's office, who will determine whether charges, if any, need to be filed.
