(MISHAWAKA) - Police have arrested a northern Indiana woman on a preliminary charge of feticide after the body of an infant was found dead inside a restaurant trash bin.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander Tim Corbett issued a news release Monday night saying 32-year-old Purvi Patel of Granger had been arrested and the investigation was continuing. It was not immediately known where Patel was being held or whether she had an attorney. The telephone listing for her had been disconnected.
Police said they found the body inside a bag late Saturday outside a Mishawaka restaurant.
The news release says feticide is defined as a person who knowingly or intentionally terminates a pregnancy with an intention other than to produce a live birth. It carries up to 20 years in prison.
