(COLUMBUS) - A Columbus couple died in a two-vehicle crash in Shelby County Sunday afternoon.
Major David Tilford, with the Shelby County Sheriff's office, says around 4:30 p.m., authorities received a 911 call about the crash with two possible fatalities on State Road 252 and State Road 9.
Tilford says after further investigation, it was determined that a 32-year-old Shelbyville woman was driving her car southbound on State Road 9 when another car driven by 28-year-old Joshua Sanchez-Nagakane going east on State Road 252 failed to stop at the intersection and entered into the traveled portion of State Road 9. The woman was unable to avoid hitting the Sanchez-Nagakane's car, forcing both vehicles off the southeast side of the roadway.
Sanchez-Nagakane was trapped inside his car. He was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 35-year-old Jennifer Nagakane, was also trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Shelbyville woman received a lower leg injury and was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital. Her passenger, a 35-year-old man from Edinburgh, was not injured. A three-year-old boy was also in the vehicle. He was and was transported to Methodist Hospital for minor injuries from a seatbelt.
Toxicology results are pending and the investigation continues.
The Shelbyville Fire Department, Flat Rock Fire Department, Shelbyville Fire Department Medics, Ross Wrecker and the Shelby County Sheriff Department Fatal Crash Team assisted the sheriff's department at the scene.
