(GREENCASTLE) - A Putnam County doctor will spend the remainder of his sentence for illegally dispensing narcotics in a nursing home because of medical issues.
Putnam Circuit Court Judge Matt Headley originally sentenced 58-year-old Ray D. Howell to four years in the Indiana Department of Correction, with another two years on probation. But he agreed Tuesday to modify Howell's sentence to allow him to be moved to a nursing home.
Medical officials have diagnosed Howell with dementia. They say he can't read or write and is dependent on others for day-to-day living.
Howell's family plans to pay the nursing home fees.
Howell was arrested Oct. 18, 2011, after a two-year investigation.
Investigators say he administered unnecessary treatments and prescriptions, often in exchange for sexual favors.
