(FORT WAYNE) - A man died in Fort Wayne Saturday night after he crashed his SUV into a tree, police said
WISH TV8 reports, the crash happened at the intersection of Hayden and McCulloch Streets around 7:15 p.m. When officers arrived, the adult man was unconscious and unresponsive. Medics took him to a hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.
Police think the man was driving an SUV west on Hayden. He then tried to pass a box truck that was also going west on Hayden. The SUV sideswiped the box truck and drove into a tree.
The driver and a passenger in the box truck were not hurt.
It's not clear at this point why the man hit the tree. It's still being investigated to find out if the impact with the truck caused him to hit the tree, or if any other factors played a role. It's not known yet if alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team is investigating the crash and searching for evidence or witnesses. Anyone who was in the area and may have seen something is encouraged to contact police.
