(MARION) - A Marion man died following a trench collapse at his home Wednesday evening.
The walls of a trench collapsed on two men at a home on West CR 406 South in Marion. The homeowner, Ross Hoffman, 55, and a friend, Jason Ewer, were buried in the trench when emergency crews arrived.
Hoffman, who was buried up to his chest, was reportedly unresponsive at the scene. He was taken to Marion General Hospital, where he died.
Ewer, a Grant County Sheriff's Department deputy, was buried up to his waist in the trench. He was also taken to the hospital, where he was checked out and released.
Police at the scene say Ewer tried to assist Hoffman, trying to create an airway and free his friend before emergency crews arrived.
