(MONROVIA) - A community was speculating after the Monroe Township Fire District Board terminated the contract of Chief Chris McKinney.
McKinney had run the fire department of 21 volunteers in Monrovia since 2010.
The new interim chief, Miguel Ongay, said he was recently called to step in and provide leadership for the fire department.
The head of the board, Dennis Lee, confirmed an investigation into the firing was underway.
There was plenty of speculation about why the board fired McKinney as chief, but Lee would not comment on the reasons, and only said the move was necessary.
"I'm not going to speak to that sir. We have no comment at this time. We're going to let the investigations follow through on that and we'll see what happens from there," Lee said.
Lee said there was money to run the fire department with more than $60,000 available until the end of the year.
He said he wanted the community to know that there is complete coverage in case of a fire.
