(CENTER POINT) - At approximately 6 p.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Office received reports of an off-road vehicle being operated in a reckless manner on County Road 200 North, east of State Road 59, near Center Point.
ndiana Conservation Officer Chris Springstun reports a short time later, there was a crash involving the off-road vehicle on County Road 200 North.
The ATV caught fire and consumed the vehicle.
Springstun says two small children were instantly killed as a result of the vehicle striking a concrete culvert wall adjacent to the roadway.
The adult female driver was air lifted to an Indianapolis hospital where she later died of injuries sustained in the crash.
A third passenger, a male toddler, was air lifted to an Indianapolis hospital and is listed in serious condition.
The crash is being investigated by Indiana Conservation Officers with assistance of the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Indiana State Police, the Clay County Coroner's Office, and the Marion County Coroner's Office.
Other agencies assisting at the scene include the Center Point Volunteer Fire Department and the Trans Care EMS.
Autopsies are pending.
Springstun says the names of the friver and her three young passengers are being withheld pending notification of relatives.
Springstun added the preliminary investigative conclusions indicate excessive speed and alcohol may be contributing factors.
