(SCOTTSBURG) - A Scottsburg couple was arrested Sunday night after leaving their infant child alone in a locked car, police said.
Clayton Koch, 25, of Deputy, and Ashley Davis, 22, of Scottsburg, were taken to Scott County Jail and charged with neglect of a dependent, a Class D felony, after Indiana State Police say they discovered their 16-month-old child had been left alone inside a locked car in a grocery store parking lot.
State police say they were attempting to serve an arrest warrant near the Jay C Food Store in Scottsburg when a woman approached them, stating there was a small child locked in a car with no parents or guardians in or around the vehicle.
Troopers discovered the child buckled into a car seat inside a locked 2001 Mitsubishi. One trooper stayed with the child while a second entered the store to look for the parents, according to the police report.
Police said the child was left alone inside the vehicle for approximately 20 minutes. Koch and David told troopers that they left the child in the car because they child was asleep when they arrived at the store.
The child, who was not injured, was taken under the control of the Division of Family and Children in Scott County.
