(PORTLAND) - A 16-year-old eastern Indiana girl has been arrested after allegedly putting ground-up rat poison in her parents’ coffee grounds.
The Commercial Review reports the parents of the Portland girl found the poison in the coffee grounds and reported the incident to the Jay County Sheriff's Department.
Officers picked the girl up at Jay County High School on Monday, and she admitted to the poisoning attempt during an interview.
She's now being held at the Delaware County Juvenile Detention Center in Muncie.
Jay County Prosecutor Wesley Schemenaur told The Star Press on Thursday the girl will be prosecuted as a juvenile. He says she won't be charged with attempted murder, a count that would result in an automatic waiver into adult court.
Portland is about 45 miles south of Fort Wayne.
