(CROWN POINT) - Three people are dead after a Sunday evening crash involving an off-road vehicle in Clay County.
Police say the driver of a 1996 Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV operated the vehicle in a reckless manner resulting in a crash on County Road 200 North near Center Point. A post-crash fire consumed the vehicle and two small children were instantly killed as a result of the vehicle striking a concrete culvert wall adjacent to the roadway.
Two children, 1-year-old Jaylen Rawls, of Harvey, Illinois, and 2-year-old Nevaeh Dempsey were killed on impact. Both were killed from blunt force trauma to the head and chest.
The driver, 22-year-old Andrea Allen, of Indianapolis, was air-lifted to an Indianapolis hospital where she later died from injuries. Allen died of multiple blunt froce trauma injuries
A third passenger, 2-year-old, Xavier Rawls, of Harvey, Illinois, was also air-lifted to a hospital and is listed in stable condition at Riley Hospital as of Monday.
A Preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed and alcohol may be contributing factors.
Franklin Davis Jr., of Indianapolis was fishing nearby and observed the accident. He was able to pull Allen and Xavier Rawls from the burning wreckage.
