(EDINBURGH) - Camp Atterbury will lose hundreds of jobs over the next few years as its military training mission winds down, but officials at the southern Indiana base say they’re confident the facility’s long-term future is secure.
Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger of the Indiana National Guard tells the Daily Journal that the facility's mission will change as wars wind down overseas, but continued growth at Camp Atterbury is positioning it for new duties.
Umbarger says Camp Atterbury has retooled itself and has attracted disaster exercises and training for chemical and nuclear response. Those will remain, and new programs that include drone testing are likely to keep jobs at the site and soldiers coming through.
About 150,000 soldiers and 50,000 civilian workers have been trained at Camp Atterbury since 2001.
