(LOWELL) - Authorities in northwestern Indiana say a 43-year-old man checking on a neighbor’s house died in an explosion that leveled the house and damaged a nearby home.
The Lake County coroner's office says Victor Strain was dead when his body was found early Tuesday, several hours after Monday night's blast along Indiana 2 near the town of Lowell.
Lowell Fire Chief Clint Gorball tells The Times of Munster, that when emergency crews arrived one home was leveled with debris scattered as far as 75 yards away and a neighboring house was engulfed in flames. He says no one was inside the second house.
The Lake County Sheriff's Department and the state fire marshal's office are investigating what caused the explosion at the home about 20 miles south of Gary.
