(FAIRFIELD, IL) - A Fairfield man accused of attempting to rape a Wayne County woman Friday afternoon was in critical but stable condition at an Evansville hospital after being run over by a van.
According to Wayne County officials, 34-year-old Carl Atteberry is accused of driving a woman on a four-wheeler down an oil lease road north of Interstate-64 where he attempted to rape her.
The woman broke free, and ran to a nearby county road screaming for help where a van, occupied by three men, stopped to help the woman.
Atteberry started beating on the van and when he got in front of it, he was run down.
Police interviewed the three men in the van and released them pending further investigation.
Atteberry faces a preliminary felony charge of aggravated criminal sexual assault for the alleged attempted rape. Atteberry was free on bond pending trial on charges of aggravated domestic battery for allegedly choking his wife. He is also awaiting trial on charges of violating an order of protection and aggravated assault of a police officer.
