(SOUTH BEND) - The University of Notre Dame will hold a Blue Mass to pray for police officers, firefighters and other emergency responders and their families.
University president the Rev. John Jenkins will celebrate the Mass at 5:15 p.m. Thursday at the school's Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The university first held the Mass after the attacks of September 11, 2001. It has celebrated the service annually since then to honor and pray for all who serve public safety.
The Blue Mass is named for the predominant color of uniforms worn by police officers and firefighters. Representatives of police and fire departments throughout the South Bend area are expected to attend.
