Remains Identified As 1996 Homicide Victim

Last updated on Saturday, September 28, 2013

(LADOGA) - Authorities say DNA testing has confirmed human remains found in a shallow grave in a central Indiana barn are those of a 1996 homicide victim.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office says the remains are those of Ennis Craig Roberts of Carmel. The remains were found in May near the Montgomery County town of Ladoga about 30 miles west of Indianapolis.

Police say the man convicted of killing Roberts directed investigators to the farm. Forty-seven-year-old John D. Smith was an employee of Roberts' landscaping business who is serving a 65-year sentence for murder.

Prosecutors maintained Smith killed Roberts and then used Roberts' checks and credit cards to establish his own lawn care business and to pay for shopping sprees and a gambling trip to Las Vegas.
