(MONTGOMERY CO.) - A train crashed into a dump truck Tuesday morning in Montgomery County after the dump truck’s driver was blinded by sunlight, police said.
The crash was reported about 8:30 a.m. on County Road 200 East south of Elmore Road in Crawfordsville.
Indiana State Police said preliminary investigation showed the dump truck, driven by Jacob L. Davis, 24, of Crawfordsville, was headed north on County Road 200 East, north of County Road 150 South, and he started to cross the railroad crossing, which is marked by a stop sign and rural "RR" crossing signs.
ISP said the train, which was operated by CSX Railway Services engineer Myles J. Slayton of Indianapolis, was eastbound approaching the crossing, with the horn blowing.
Investigators said Slayton advised he saw the truck enter the crossing, so he applied the brakes, but to no avail. Davis said he looked to the east but the sun was glaring in his eyes and he did not see the train approaching. That's when the train hit the dump truck on the passenger side just behind the cab, pushing the truck roughly 15 yards before it rolled over into the ditch.
Davis was not injured and was wearing his seat belt, and ISP said no one on the train was injured.
Investigators said the train was traveling between 30 and 35 miles per hour at the time of the crash. It had left Avon, Ind., Tuesday morning and it was headed to Chicago.
ISP said the investigation is ongoing.
