(JOHNSON CO.) - A man angered after learning of his friend’s death accidentally shot himself, Johnson County Police said.
Sunday evening just before 6:30 p.m., police were dispatched to a home in the 5400 block of Old Smith Valley Road on reports of an accidental shooting.
When police arrived, they saw several people carrying a man to the back seat of a vehicle sitting in front of the home. The man appeared to have been shot in the lower leg and toe.
Martin Smith and the people helping him into the vehicle, told police he accidentally shot himself after he got a phone call from his mother in Louisville. His mother told him that a longtime friend of his had been fatally shot in Louisville over the weekend.
Smith said he became very upset and claimed he knew who shot his friend. He told police he had planned on going to Louisville to get revenge. However, when he grabbed his gun to put in his waistband, it accidentally discharged and he shot himself in the shin.
Police said when Smith was being questioned, he was slurring his speech. His eyes were bloodshot and watery, and he appeared to be intoxicated.
Smith was hospitalized for his injuries and faced possible charges of criminal recklessness and resisting law enforcement.
