(INDIANAPOLIS) - Crews from Indianapolis Fire Department battled a fire at the Ritter Inn at the corner of Ritter and Brookville Road Wednesday morning.
The call came in shortly after 2 a.m. and additional companies were called to help contain the blaze.
Firefighters took a defensive approach shortly after arriving due to the risk of collapse in the vacant restaurant and bar. Using aerial apparatus, they controlled the fire for better than two hours before the fire was out.
The building consists of an original story and a half house, surrounded by a one story addition, which made reaching the fire difficult, according to IFD Lt. Bonnie Hensley.
Once a popular restaurant and for Navistar factory workers, it has been vacant for an undetermined time. The number on the for sale sign on the building drew a return call that reported the owner lives in Texas and may not have insurance, according to Hensley.
The building is a total loss.
No injuries were reported.
